Roles and Responsibilities

An Industrial Firefighter’s main role on any job site is to actively respond to an emergency situation, such as an uncontrolled fire or release of potentially harmful substances that may come in contact with personnel on location. The firefighters travel in teams of two, sometimes three, allowing one to control the pump while the other suppresses the fire with foam and water. The Firefighter’s tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Act as emergency personnel on site by:
    • Being first on the scene to control fires,
    • Assisting in the rescue of workers,
    • Assisting personnel exposed to harmful substances,
  • Assisting H2S Supervisors and/or First Aid Attendants in the event of an emergency;
  • Educating crews on the hazards of flammable substances and emergency evacuations;
  • Be an active participant in all safety meetings;
  • Operate all company vehicles and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner;
  • Maintain all tickets;
  • Perform pre and post trips for all jobs;
  • Follow all company Health and Safety rules.

On many shifts, firefighters focus primarily on remaining prepared and reducing risk, with active emergency response required only when an incident occurs.

Routine duties can include inspecting fire trucks, pumps, hoses, personal protective equipment, and other emergency-response equipment to confirm everything is ready for use.   • NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2: covers entry-level firefighting job performance requirements, including fireground operations and rescue techniques (NFPA).
  • NFPA 1081: the standard for facility fire brigade members, covering the site-specific duties of responding within an organized industrial brigade rather than a municipal department (NFPA).
  • Occupational First Aid or equivalent: medical response training for on-site injuries.
  • H2S Alive: required given the exposure risk to hydrogen sulfide on many industrial and oilfield sites.
  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement (preferred): needed to operate company fire apparatus and support vehicles.
  • Current driver’s abstract: clean, and dated within the last three months.

Rapidly escalating fires and explosions. Flammable liquids, gases, vapours, combustible dusts, reactive substances and pressurized equipment can produce fast-moving fires, flash fires, explosions or vessel failures.

Toxic-gas exposure. H2S and other hazardous gases can overcome a worker with little warning. Atmospheric monitoring is essential where exposure is possible, while SCBA is required for firefighting and entry into unknown or immediately dangerous atmospheres.

Heat stress and physical exhaustion. Fire suppression and rescue work can require sustained physical effort while wearing heavy protective clothing and respiratory equipment, increasing the risk of fatigue and heat-related illness.

Confined-space and elevated-work hazards. Depending on the facility and the brigade’s assigned duties, responders may work around tanks, vessels, pits, towers or other restricted and elevated areas. These environments introduce risks such as oxygen deficiency, toxic exposure, entrapment and falls.

Industrial fire brigades run on clearly split responsibilities, so everyone knows their job the moment an emergency starts. On the ground, that structure generally breaks down into three core roles:

  • Brigade or shift lead: Coordinates multiple two- or three-person teams on larger sites and holds incident command until the situation is resolved or outside responders arrive.
